Do I Have a Sinus Infection or a Toothache?

When you’re in pain, you likely want to deal with it as quickly as possible. That can be difficult if you don’t know whether your problem is with your teeth or not.

In fact, various types of facial pain can easily be mistaken for one another. In particular, you might have trouble differentiating sinus infections and toothaches. If you’re dealing with discomfort, here are some things that you can do to tell these conditions apart.

What Does a Sinus infection Feel Like?

Your sinuses are located across the face, just under the surface. When they become infected, you could experience a painful pressure radiating out from the face. The sinuses are fairly close to the upper jaw, so it can almost feel like a painful toothache in one or more of your top teeth. Less often, you may experience the same kind of dull ache in the lower teeth as well.

A sinus infection is accompanied by several other flu-like symptoms, much like a cold or flu. You may experience fever, fatigue, or sore throat, along with mucus buildup. Finally, you may experience a “full” feeling in the ear, something you’re unlikely to have with a toothache.

What Does a Toothache Feel Like?

Explaining what a toothache feels like can be a little complicated because tooth pain isn’t a condition itself; it’s a symptom of many different oral health problems. Infection tends to be the most common, along with serious decay, a broken tooth, or a dental abscess.

The main thing to keep in mind is that sinus infections tend to be much wider-reaching than individual toothaches. If you have a problem with one tooth in particular, the pain should be sharp and fairly localized, as opposed to the dull pain of a sinus infection.

If you’re dealing with any kind of facial pain, your dentist will be able to help you or, at the very least, diagnose the issue you’re having. So if you’re hurting, the best course of action is to reach out to a professional who could help you.
