Admit it: you’ve seen the look of disappointment on your dentist’s face when asked if you have been flossing. Maybe you genuinely haven’t been flossing, which is cause for concern, or it could be that you are but you’re doing it the wrong way. No matter the excuse, flossing is important to your overall oral health. If done incorrectly or not at all, it can be damaging to your gums and can lead to serious diseases that require additional dental visits. Keep your dentist happy with this safe and effective flossing technique that is sure to get you the thumbs up at your next appointment.

Why is Flossing Important?

According to the American Dental Association, flossing isn’t optional if you wish to maintain proper dental hygiene. Just like brushing your teeth, flossing is vital to keeping plaque and other debris from building between teeth. This type of buildup can lead to cavities, tooth decay, or gum disease.

Periodontal disease, which is also known as gum disease, can be linked to other conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. If you are pregnant, it can lead to premature birth in your baby, as well as low birth weight. Among the signs of periodontal disease are bleeding and swollen gums, bad breath, and a shift in the way your teeth feel.

Regular checkups with your dentist can ensure you receive proper dental care, as well as important information as to how to take care of your teeth at home.

What is the Proper Flossing Technique?

Now that you’re standing in front of your bathroom mirror, make sure to follow these steps:

  1. Take 18” of floss and wrap it around your middle fingers on both hands.
  2. Using your thumbs and forefingers, hold the floss tightly.
  3. Gently move the floss between your teeth. DO NOT push the floss upward or downward as it can be damaging to your gums.
  4. Once you reach your gums, make a “C” shape with the floss, and gently move it between your tooth and gums.
  5. Holding the floss tightly and using up and down motions, rub the floss against your tooth.

When repeating the process, make sure you don’t forget the back side of your back teeth. These areas are just as important, so make sure you treat them just the same. After you’ve finished flossing, throw your floss and all of that bacteria away.

While flossing may be a simple task, never underestimate its importance to your overall health. By spending a few minutes each day brushing and flossing your teeth, you will be on your way to a happier and healthier smile.
